Dunrobin Castle - Whaligoe Steps - Duncansby - Kinlochbervie
A marathon day through Scotland's far north: magnificent Dunrobin Castle, the Whaligoe Steps (sadly without orcas), John o' Groats with a business meeting on miserable internet, and the dramatic cliffs of Duncansby (sadly without puffins). Only late at night do we reach Kinlochbervie via lonely coastal roads.
Today is a long and exciting day in Scotland! We start the day with a very delicious breakfast. There is even vegan bacon and sausages, toast on a toast rack, scrambled eggs, hash browns, beans, mushrooms and tomatoes. We are full and satisfied and ready for this eventful day. Our Airbnb host gives us great recommendations that are going to keep us busy all day. First we tour the Dunrobin Castle, which is very close to our Airbnb, from the outside. It is a very beautiful castle with well-preserved architecture. We are impressed by the size and beauty of the building. Next we head to the Whaligoe Steps, as according to our host there is a chance to see orcas there. Unfortunately we don’t get to see any orcas, but it’s still a great experience to see the cliffs and the sea roaring below us. We then continue north and arrive in Wick and later in John o’ Groats, the northernmost point of Scotland. Annina has to do a business meeting there with a very poor internet connection and Nicolas uses the time to go hiking. Next we drive to Duncansby, where there should be puffins to see, but unfortunately we can’t spot any. Normally the “Puffin Season” starts at the end of April, but we are hoping to see some puffins already now, at the beginning of April. Nevertheless, it is an incredibly beautiful place with breathtaking rocks and views. We then continue west along the coastal road and pass some very remote places. We make a short stop at a secluded beach and enjoy the silence and solitude. As night falls, we are still in the car, driving alone on a remote road. A bit scary somehow, but also exciting because we are the only people for miles around. We finally make it to Kinlochbervie rather late, where we are welcomed into our next Airbnb by a nice older lady. She shows us to our room and explains everything we need to know about our stay.
