Narvik - Umeå
Return the car, stock up on provisions, uphill to the tiny station: for 7.5 hours the train rolls through Lapland while we edit photos and play Monopoly. Despite a delay we catch our connection in Boden and are welcomed late at night in Umeå by Salome and Lucas.
Today we get up early, because we continue our journey. Breakfast is included at the hotel today, so we have a modest buffet there. We pack our things and return our car to Hertz in Narvik city. Then we return to the hotel and buy our food for the train journey and souvenirs on the way.
When we arrive at the hotel, we grab our luggage and check out. The way to the train station in Narvik is exhausting, as we are no longer used to carrying our own luggage, and the whole route is uphill. The train station in Narvik is tiny, there is only one train every two hours, so there is only one track to board, which makes finding our train very easy. We have reserved seats, but the carriage where our seats would be is completely full because there is a large German travel group there. So we just sit in another carriage where there are still free seats. During the 7.5 hour train ride, we eat and edit our photos and videos. We also play Monopoly on the iPad several times. Our train is late, but we still manage to catch the connecting train at Boden C. Our next train is already waiting on the track next to us - it’s an overnight train to Stockholm. But we only travel as far as Umeå Östra. The train is late and we reach our destination after 4 hours instead of 3.5 hours.
Salome and Lucas pick us up at the station and accompany us to their shared flat, where we spend the night.
