Our last leg of the journey leads from Bangkok to Zurich. At 1 am we are in Nong Prue, where Suvarnabhumi airport is located. We have a very calm but sleepless flight. At the window the horizon glows orange and yellow, a piece of the wing is visible in the window frame, and beneath us lies a carpet of clouds.
Then the Alps come into view. In the first light the snow-covered peaks glow orange, dark hills lie in front of them, banks of fog drift through the valleys, and far below we can make out green meadows and single settlements. For us it is an incredible panorama. Switzerland welcomes us with a beautiful panorama above the clouds, but with clouds after landing in Zurich.
At 8 am it is 16 degrees in Zurich under a partly cloudy sky. The day before it was still 32 degrees on Lombok. From the airport we take the train back to Basel, where we unpack and make the first of five washes.
