Epic sunrise and a journey to the end of the world
The sunrise turns out so glorious that even Annina gets out of bed, we photograph for a solid 2.5 hours. The kayak plan founders on Norway's mandatory kayaking licence, but in return Å at the 'end of the world' shows its sunniest side before a snow flurry closes out the day.
Like yesterday, Nicolas heads out at blue hour to photograph around our mini-villa. When it becomes clear that today’s sunrise is going to be glorious, Annina gets out of bed too and comes outside to enjoy and photograph it. We easily spend 2.5 hours shooting outside before going back in for breakfast.
The weather stays beautiful, and when we spot a few people out on the fjord in kayaks, we go looking for a kayak rental. There we learn that in Norway you can only rent kayaks with a kayaking licence, leaving us just the option of a guided tour, which is already fully booked for today. A shame. Next time we’ll either have acquired that elusive licence or be quicker off the mark! We enjoy the day anyway, even without a kayak, and drive once more to Å, the “end of the world”. Beyond this little village there is nothing: not only do the Lofoten end here, but so does the E10 road that we’ve driven so often in both Norway and Sweden. The sun shines gorgeously and it’s suddenly unusually warm, with none of the biting winds we’ve grown used to.
After these blissful moments in the sun we drive back to our mini-villa and climb a snow- and ice-covered hill right next door, which rewards us with a wonderful view over Sakrisøy and Reine. Shortly afterwards the weather deteriorates rapidly, ending in a proper flurry of snow and wind. We’re glad to be inside, packing, eating and editing our photos.
