Silver rings and rice terraces in Amed

We learn to make silver rings, eat fried banana at the rice terraces and take our scooter up a wild road for sunset.

For local excursions we always rent a scooter on this trip. Today we learn from locals how to make silver rings, sit over a fried banana and a fresh coconut at the Berina Rice Terrace and drive to Viewpoint Resto for sunset. We want to be back down before the sun sets, and it just barely works out.

For local excursions we rent a scooter, which we book via WhatsApp. At 1 pm it is 29 degrees and we are at the Silvermaking Class in Karang Asem. There we learn how to create our own silver rings from locals. The workshop is open, a woven roof above us and a stone wall behind us. At 4 pm we go to the Berina Rice Terrace. It is 29 degrees and partly cloudy, and the sun breaks through the clouds in rays above the forested slopes. We enjoy a fried banana and a fresh coconut. On the wooden table there is also a glass with a slice of lime and a straw and a small cup. The coconut is decorated with flowers, Nicolas drinks from the fruit through a straw, and in front of him lie the green terraces in the warm light.

For sunset we drive up to Viewpoint Resto. It is a wild and partly unpaved road that we tackle with our scooter. We try to get down before sunset but just barely make it. Through big banana leaves we see clouds glowing orange in the evening light. By the roadside colourful flags stand on bamboo poles, a blue scooter is parked against the wall and a white dog runs past. On the table there is a plate of fried rice, with krupuk, the crispy crackers, cucumber slices, some salad and small brown nuts. Behind the plate a mountain peak rises out of the clouds, and above it the low sun turns the edges of the clouds golden.
