West Lombok - South Lombok with tobacco fields and weaving village

Today we drive to South Lombok. For the hotel change we have booked a car with a driver, because we have our suitcases with us. On the way we see huge tobacco plantations. Tobacco is an important crop on Lombok. The large light green leaves stand close together all the way to the palm trees at the edge of the field, and on the left stands a small hut with a corrugated iron roof.

Then we come to a traditional village where people weave for their living. In the yard in front of a turquoise house with strips of patterned tiles stands a rooster with black plumage and a red comb. Between him and a grey tabby cat stands an upturned wicker basket.

We see jackfruit, banana and mango trees. Jackfruits grow directly on the trunk and on thick branches, and here several spiky green fruits hang close together. The banana plants have large leaves and dry remains of leaves on the trunks, and in a mango tree hang many green mangoes. We also eat sugar bamboo.

Under an awning in front of a green house wall stands a vehicle with a motorcycle front, an open cargo bed and a fabric roof.

Weaving by hand has a long tradition on Lombok, and it is fascinating to watch. Annina tries it herself. On the floor stands a wooden spinning wheel, behind it a loom with blue and green striped threads, and next to it lie yellow pieces in a metal bowl and a woven hat. Annina sits with a woman in a headscarf in front of a loom, on which lies a violet patterned fabric.

At 5 pm it is clear at 32 degrees, and in the evening we arrive at our new hotel to a glorious sunset. In the picture a beach lies in the orange evening light, on the right a dark rock face rises, and in the distance headlands stand out in the haze.
